Repairing, Rebuilding & Replacing Teeth
Restorative dentistry covers a wide range of treatments to repair or replace teeth that are damaged, decayed or missing. At our practice, this includes tooth-coloured fillings for cavities, crowns for heavily worn or fractured teeth, root canal treatment when the nerve tissue is affected, and bridges or implants for fixed tooth replacement. Extractions and both full and partial dentures are also available.
Each treatment is planned with care, beginning with a full clinical assessment and a clear explanation of your options. We aim to preserve natural teeth wherever possible and provide durable, functional solutions that support everyday comfort.
If you're experiencing pain, have lost a filling or need to discuss tooth replacement, we’re here to help. Get in touch to arrange a consultation with Dr Salmon.
Fillings
When a tooth is affected by decay, the damaged area is carefully removed, and the tooth is restored using tooth-coloured filling material. Fillings help prevent further deterioration and restore the tooth’s natural shape and function. At our practice, we focus on conserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible and use materials that are designed to blend with your existing teeth. The process is typically straightforward and will be completed in a single visit.
Root Canals
A root canal may be recommended when the internal tissue of a tooth — including nerves and blood vessels — becomes inflamed or infected, often due to deep decay or trauma. The aim is to retain the natural tooth by carefully cleaning and sealing the root canals inside. This helps avoid extraction.
Crowns
Crowns are custom-made covers designed to protect and restore teeth that have been significantly weakened by decay, wear or fracture. Often referred to as 'caps', crowns are shaped to fit over the natural tooth and are colour-matched to blend with your surrounding teeth. Our crowns, typically made from non-metallic materials such as zirconia and porcelain, are custom made in Australia.
Dr Salmon may recommend a crown when a filling is no longer sufficient to restore strength or appearance. Crowns can also be used after root canal treatment. Each one is designed to improve durability and function while supporting the long-term health of the underlying tooth.
Bridges
A dental bridge may be used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring a prosthetic tooth to the adjacent natural teeth. This helps restore chewing function, speech and appearance. Each bridge is custom-designed and made to match the surrounding teeth in shape and colour, providing a stable and natural-looking result.
To prepare for a bridge, the supporting teeth are carefully shaped to receive crowns that hold the replacement tooth in place. Bridges can be a suitable option when implants are not recommended or desired.
Extractions
Tooth extractions may be necessary when a tooth is severely decayed, fractured beyond repair, or affected by advanced gum disease.
We understand that the idea of an extraction may feel overwhelming, so we take a calm, supportive approach and aim to clearly explain each stage of the process. We provide guidance before and after treatment and offer recommendations to support healing and comfort during recovery.
Implants
Dental implants are a long-term option for replacing missing teeth. The process involves placing a titanium fixture into the jawbone, which acts as an artificial root. Once healed, a custom-made crown is attached to restore the look and function of a natural tooth.
Implants are generally considered where bone support and oral health are suitable. Dr Salmon will assess your situation carefully and explain whether this is the right option for you. Implants can improve chewing and provide a stable, fixed alternative to removable dentures
Dentures
Dentures are removable dental appliances used to replace missing teeth and restore oral function. They may be full (replacing all teeth in an arch) or partial (replacing several teeth) and are custom-made to suit the shape and fit of your mouth.
Dentures assist with chewing, speech and facial balance when natural teeth are no longer present. Ongoing guidance is available to help you gradually adjust to your new dentures.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is restorative dentistry?
Restorative dentistry refers to treatments that repair or replace teeth affected by decay, injury or general wear. It includes procedures such as fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, root canals and implants. The goal is to restore oral function, improve comfort and support long-term dental health. Depending on the situation, treatment may involve a simple repair or a more complex plan combining several approaches. Your dentist will carry out a full assessment and explain the options available based on your individual needs.
How do I know if I need restorative dental treatment?
You may benefit from restorative dental care if you are experiencing tooth pain, sensitivity, visible damage or difficulty chewing. Other signs include cracked fillings, worn-down teeth or missing teeth that affect speech or function. In some cases, problems may be detected early during a routine check-up. If you're unsure, a consultation with your dentist allows for a thorough examination and discussion of any concerns before deciding on treatment.
Are restorative treatments painful?
Restorative treatments are carried out with patient comfort in mind, and anaesthetic is used where necessary to minimise discomfort. Procedures such as fillings, crowns and root canals are generally well tolerated. If you’re feeling nervous or have a history of dental anxiety, let your dentist know — they can talk you through the steps and make adjustments to help you feel more at ease. After treatment, you may experience some mild sensitivity, which usually settles quickly with appropriate care.
